Hillside House was designed by SAOTA and conceived as a self-contained oasis in Los Angeles above Sunset Boulevard. The site is a 1687 m² estate with 300-degree views over the city basin below and the LA skyline.
MASS Beverly designs the interiors. The open-plan vertically articulated interior is to rationalize the layout through volumetric changes in the absence of mass walls. The forms and roof planes of the house are pushed forward to create external covered living spaces.
The interior design loosely uses the focal view to form two east-west and north-south wings. The living rooms are connected to extensive covered outdoor terraces, which feature lush landscaping and infinity pools along the perimeter. The generous allocation of outdoor space maximizes the potential of a livable climate.
SAOTA is a Cape Town, South Africa-based architecture and design company with extensive experience in developing open-plan living spaces where the topography and Mediterranean climate resembles that in LA.
